You gave me education
You didn't yell at my(most of the time) 
You didn't hit me(until it was for my good) 
You protected me(unless it wasn't convenient) 
You gave me a Christian upbringing

But do you want to know what I wanted? 

I wanted closeness
I wanted security 
I wanted to laugh
And dance to music
And have a friend group 
And be allowed to discover myself

I didn't care if the table was messy 
Crumbs on the floor
Food left out in childish impatience
Dishes left unwashed and cats licking plates clean
Giving animals sanctuary for the night even if they leave a smell

I wanted my tears dried and injuries cleaned
Care provided with no thought to reputation 
Active listening while I ramble senselessly
Dreams encouraged, resources provided with no discrimination
